We've upgraded takahe.social to our new UI design! You can see an example of the project profile at takahe.social/@takahe@jointaka - and there's even a working full text search for a profile's posts now.

This release will come out soon as 0.9 once we've done a bit more polishing and bugfixing - you can read aeracode.org/2023/04/29/refact by @andrew for more on the new direction!

Takahē 0.11 is out!

As we say goodbye to Python 3.10, we'd like to welcome @astraluma as our new developer! She will be jumping in to help a lot with the day-to-day operations, so Andrew can get some breathing room.

Other than that, it's just a big pile of bug fixes and minor improvements.

My process of writing a blog post is apparently still an hour of just writing at rapid speed as if I was talking about it, and then going back and copy-editing out all the commas I naturally add where I'd pause and add emphasis during a talk.

Takahē 0.10 is finally released! This is mostly performance and stability updates, but there's plenty of bugfixes to federation and the client app API as well.

Takahe fanart!

I made full-color vinyl stickers of the Takahe mascot. I didn't have quite the right colours but I think it came out nicely.

Takahē 0.9 is finally out, with our UI revamp and a whole bunch more: docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/

Post pinning is now in and working thanks to @christof - plus we've got some compatability fixes in for mentions, bot accounts, and more. 0.9 soon!

Wrote up some thoughts about @takahe and a refactor/redesign I'm doing, with the aim of more customisable profiles and proper domain separation: aeracode.org/2023/04/29/refact

(also, maybe we can support BlueSky/AT as well? Who knows!)

We've brought forward the 0.8 release (ahead of some of the bigger features landing) to get a security fix out - so it's now available: docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/

We recommend upgrading as soon as possible if you're running 0.7 or below!

Now we have access, we've fixed our initial API bugs with @ivory and it should work pretty seamlessly now from first login!

Takahē 0.7 is now released! Blocking! Emoji admin! Announcements! Loads of quality of life fixes! Read more at docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/

We've also launched a Patreon for those who want to help us out financially - that's over at patreon.com/takahe

Signups on takahe.social are now open until we hit 100 users! If you'd like an account, head to takahe.social/auth/signup/

Version 0.6.1 is out - lots of bugfixes (to the client API especially), as well as the ability to set profile metadata, fetching the history of reply threads, and optional infinite scroll! docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/

It's been a lot of work, but Takahē 0.6 is finally here! docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/

Among other features, this includes initial Mastodon Client API support (for existing client apps), custom emoji support, reporting and moderation queues, and a lot of UI and efficiency improvements.

There's still plenty more to do, but we're excited to get to a point where a new community could be run on Takahē. We'll be opening up takahe.social registrations soonish too!

OK, so here are my notes on getting @takahe to work in less than 512MB of RAM on the equivalent of a Raspberry Pi 2 (spoiler: I'm throttling it a bit):

Also, it works with pretty well, so I'm going to test other stuff (like serverless) soon.

Takahē 0.6 is now almost ready for release, with a lot of new features including emoji support, client API support, reporting and a moderation queue.

We're going to bake it for a few days here on takahe.social - if you'd like an invite, we're now giving some out if you read through jointakahe.org/takahesocial/ and follow the instructions in there!

Progress is going well towards the next release! We're particularly excited about custom emoji Emoji takahe Emoji takahe

I almost missed it, but @takahe is now officially a whole month old. How time has flown!

(And also wow, did I write a lot of code that mostly seems decent)

We've released Takahē version 0.5! docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/

Image posting and hashtags are the headline improvements this time around, but there's plenty of smaller fixes. We're going to spend the next few weeks focusing on stability and community-required features, so people can start using it with more trust!

As a celebration of image posting (mostly) working, here is a takahē, the bird we named the project after!

They were once thought extinct, but are now part of a successful recovery programme that's slowly increasing their numbers (which you can donate to at nznaturefund.org/projects/taka if you like!)

Takahē 0.4 is released!

You can see full details on docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/, but the highlights this time are post editing, deletion, replies, and the start of our moderation systems, with defederation.

Onwards! Towards... image uploading?

After a rapid three weeks of development, it's the first official release! aeracode.org/2022/11/24/takahe

This is a mark that we've reached the "alpha" feature set, so it's nowhere near complete, but what's there mostly works.

We now have a Discord server! If you'd like to chat, please come over to discord.gg/qvQ39tAMvf

*tap* *tap* Is this thing on? Hello? Hello!

It only made sense to host an "official" account for Takahē on itself; let's hope it's stable enough to make that work out.
